Advocacy. Integrity. Understanding.

Matthew Morton

I was born and raised in Nebraska. I got my undergraduate degrees in Biology and Environmental Science from Creighton University in Omaha. I then decided to pursue a career in law. After graduating
with my Juris Doctorate from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2021, I was admitted to the Wisconsin bar. I thought I would live in the Midwest my whole life, but I visited the Pacific Northwest on a trip celebrating passing the Wisconsin Bar Exam. I felt immediately at home here and moved shortly after.

During my career, I have worked at three different Public Defense Offices, representing clients facing criminal charges ranging from minor traffic infractions to violent felonies. I’ve also clerked for two judges, the Honorable Patrick Goggins in Minnesota, and the Honorable Thomas Rastetter in Oregon.

As a volunteer clerk, I’ve worked for the Cook County Office of the Public Guardian in Chicago, Illinois and the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area. All my experiences have given me the ability to communicate with clients facing all sorts of legal issues, find information that judges find persuasive, and structure arguments with that in mind.

As a product of a blended family, I’m well aware that there is no family that is “normal,” and that that’s a good thing. I relish the opportunity that this position offers me to help clients find out what works best for their family, and I enjoy zealously advocating for them both in and out of the courtroom. Whether I’m helping with divorce, child custody, child support, name changes, protective orders, or other legal issues, I strive to help explain the often-complex legal issues at play, listen and respect client concerns, and work towards an equitable solution that works for everyone whenever practicable.
